Before you____. Now you____.
Before we____. Now we____.
Before they____. Now they____.
English Kills Art Gallery, Brooklyn, NY
November 12, 2011
The 3-hour performance began with the
performers guiding pieces of hay between
their lips. The movement then dispersed
and Sarah H. Paulson laid on the floor as
Gavin Kenyon chopped off her hair. Holly
Faurot sat beside them, holding a video
monitor which displayed Ruth Lauer-Manenti
brushing Faurot’s hair in a grooming ritual.
Further back in the space, Stephanie
Waddell and Daniel Jacobs mimicked the
movements of Lauer-Manenti displayed on
different video monitors. Meanwhile, an
acupuncture treatment with Angela
Vitacolonna and Arabella Kauffmann,
conducted by Laura Barnard Stelmok, took
place in an adjacent room.
The performance concluded with an act of
endurance during which Paulson repeatedly
lifted and released Faurot’s body. When
all physical strength was lost, Stelmok
re-entered the room and drove a stake
through Paulson and then through Faurot
into the concrete floor.
The first 2-hours of music was composed
by ABEARICA. The final hour of music was
performed live by Anthony Austin and
Lucas Van Lenten.
